NARENDRA MODI ON TRACK FOR A HAT-TRICK
MODI’S IMMINENT COMEBACK?
The The verdict for the 2024 Lok Sabha Election of India is set to be announced on June 4, 2024. In the last election in 2019, the BJP and its allies secured 352 of the 543 seats, with the BJP alone winning 303 seats. Political analysts Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Kishor have shared their predictions for the 2024 elections, stirring anticipation about the outcome.
Yogendra Yadav predicts that the BJP-led NDA might struggle to secure a clear victory in the 2024 elections. In a YouTube video, he forecasts that the BJP will win 240 to 260 seats, with NDA allies adding 35 to 45 seats, totaling 275 to 305 seats—enough to form a government but short of the BJP’s 400-seat target. Yadav also foresees a revival for the Congress party, expecting it to win 85 to 100 seats, up from 52 in 2019. Additionally, he anticipates the INDIA bloc, the Congress-led alliance, will win 120 to 135 seats, giving the Opposition alliance 205 to 235 seats and posing a significant challenge to the BJP.Yogendra Yadav predicts that the BJP-led NDA might struggle to secure a clear victory in the 2024 elections. On the other hand, Political strategist Prashant Kishor believes there is no strong dissatisfaction with the BJP government or significant demand for change in the 2024 elections. Kishor, head of the Jan Suraaj Party, predicts that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will likely lead the BJP to another victory, potentially matching or surpassing its 2019 tally of 303 seats. In an NDTV interview, Kishor stated that for the BJP to be defeated, it would need tolose 100 seats in North and West India without gaining any in the East and South. Currently, the BJP holds fewer than 50 of the 240 seats in the East and South but dominates the North and West with 260-270 out of 300 seats. Kishor doubts the BJP will lose 100 seats in these regions and notes the party’s growing vote share and seats in the South and East.
Whatever be the outcomes of this election, one thing is certain: the political landscape of India is shifting, heralding towards the end of dynastic rule.
Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh of Congress spoke of “garibi hatao”, but Prime Minister Modi has made it a reality. In 1971, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi launched the slogan “Garibi Hatao, Desh Bachao” (Remove Poverty, Save the Country) as part of her election campaign, aiming to eradicate poverty and gain support from the poor. This initiative was tied to the 5th Five-Year Plan, which sought high growth rates, better income distribution, and increased domestic savings. But many have criticised former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for coining the slogan “Garibi Hatao” (eradicate poverty) years ago, with the Congress only exploiting the poor for its vote bank.
Union Minister, Amit Shah, once pointed out that during the Congress rule, manygovernment schemes remained confined to
paper. He noted that despite Indira Gandhi’s repeated calls to remove poverty, there was no tangible improvement in the lives of the poor.
“In Congress’ rule, government schemes remained on paper for years. Indiraben was tired of calling ‘garibi hatao,’ but it made no change,” Shah asserted. In reality, it was more like ‘Congress aur Nehru-Gandhi parivaar ki garibi hatao’. Amit Shah said, “In eight years, Narendrabhai (Modi) has provided a gas stove, a toilet, a bank account, electricity connection in every house. And now potable water is being provided to every house. The task of providing cards of Ayushman Bharat Yojana to 60 crore people and facility of free of cost medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh has been attained by leader of BJP and our Prime Minister Narendrabhai.”
As the BJP seeks a third term, Prime Minister Modi has campaigned extensively across India. Beginning his campaign in Kanyakumari on
March 16, he has participated in over 200 public events, including rallies and roadshows, over 75 days and around 80 interviews
conducted. Major states where he focused his efforts include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Odisha. Unlike his
counterparts, Prime Minister Modi has been very present on the ground.
