INDIA ACQUIRES SELF-RELIANT MISSILE SYSTEMS TO COUNTER CHINA, PAKISTAN DRONES

The Indian Army and Air Force are enhancing their defense capabilities against drone threats from China and Pakistan. They are developing indigenous shoulder-launched missile systems and procuring them from Russia. These initiatives aim to provide 350 launchers and 2000 missiles to the troops, strengthening readiness along the borders. One project focuses on laser beam riding Very Short-Range Air Defense Systems (VSHORADS), developed in collaboration with a DPSU and a private sector company. The second project, led by DRDO in partnership with Adani Defense and I-Comm Engineering Limited, aims to adapt tripod-based systems for soldier-launched missiles. India’s pursuit of shoulder-based missile systems started in 2009, intending to replace Russian Igla-1M missiles. Despite previous setbacks, efforts are underway to revive the project under the Make in India Initiative. Emergency procurement from Russia has provided some launchers, with more expected soon, but the overall requirement exceeds 500 launchers. Indigenous development initiatives are crucial for bolstering Indian defense capabilities, highlighting the urgency and importance of these efforts.
