In the world of chess, one name is now etched in the minds of enthusiasts and aspirants alike: R Praggnanandhaa. This young Indian chess grandmaster has not only dazzled the global chess stage but has also become a beacon of inspiration for many. His recent World Cup performance might have ended with a runner-up title, but it’s his incredible tenacity and strategic brilliance that experts and fans admire. Going head-to-head with Magnus Carlsen, the world’s top-ranked player, Praggnanandhaa’s resilience in the tie-breakers captured hearts worldwide.

Hailing from Chennai, Praggnanandhaa’s journey began with remarkable achievements. At an astonishing age of 10, he earned the title of international master, showcasing his unparalleled talent. Not resting on laurels, he shattered records by becoming a grandmaster at just 12 years old, the second-youngest at that time.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally commended Praggnanandhaa’s “remarkable” display and his unwavering spirit. Experts describe his achievements as “tectonic and seminal,” a testament to his profound impact on Indian chess.

Yet, Praggnanandhaa’s story goes beyond the board. From a modest background, he fought financial challenges, his parents borrowing funds to support his passion. A turning point came in 2016 when sponsorship enabled him to fully focus on his journey. Supported by family, especially his sister who ignited his interest, Praggnanandhaa’s journey continues to inspire. Traveling with him, his mother provides a taste of home with Tamil dishes during tournaments.

As said by Devangshu Datta chess columnist and an internationally rated chess player; “Prag may have lost, but India’s winning run may just have begun”.
